Reduced user friction while splitting a payment in the Google Pay app

Personal Project

Google Pay is my favorite mobile app when it comes to online UPI payments.

Things I like about the Google Pay:

  • Bloatware free
  • Easy to send money
  • Lightweight in use
  • User-friendly user interface
  • One-click payment and recharges

These are okay, but I think one part should have some fixes in the UX. If you have ever used the Google Pay app for group expenses then you will understand what I am talking about. If not then let us know what it is and how it works.

Spilt Payment in Group:
In Google Pay, we can create a group with our friends and family to track and split the expenses that are being done by the different members of the group.

To split a payment you need to go through the following user data flow and steps:

This is what a typical user data flow chart looks like. But there are more extra features and steps you have to take if you want to make some minor adjustments between the payment and groups of members.

Among all the features that the company has provided, they are missing out on one feature that frustrates me a lot to add a payment every time in the app that gives an option to Select All and Deselect All group members while making a payment request.

User Emotion Mapping During The Process

My Solution

So I decided to fix this feature and propose the same to the company to try to roll out this feature as soon as possible.

By implementing the selection shortcuts in the list, users can easily select and deselect all with only one click.

Before this, I needed to deselect all the members one by one and just select the desired one.

I just have 30 members in the group but what if I have 50 or more than 50 members? I need to go through every member and deselect them.

But if we follow my solution then it will be easy for users to make a payment request.

Learnings and outcome:
We need to give our users control over most of the things and let them play with the data and user interface they are interacting with. This is one of the factors that comes under the heuristic ux method.
